Sisterhood of hiphop

It’s widely known that reality television rots your brain. So as with all vices that cause brain damage (drinking, smoking, bad boys) it’s best to indulge only in moderation. I usually get my weekly dose of rachetness from the oh so addictive Love and Hip Hop Atlanta. Only Love and Hip Hop Atlanta tends to center around all those pretty ladies and their very juicy relationship and family drama. We’re all human and sometimes watching the sheer craziness others go through reminds us that we’re not alone in the madness. But what if I told you there was another show about young, fly, super driven women only it mainly focused on the undiluted genius of the dopest lady lyricist in the game. This is no urban legend, it sisterhood of hip hop!

Of course life is messy so there is just enough drama to keep you hooked but what’s admirable is that these ladies don’t let it get in the way of their grind. They are all about their business and they are very much talented. As a matter of fact, despite the fact that this is a reality show I often walk away feeling as if I’d learned something.  For example this week’s episode featured award winning rapper T.I. He came on the show in order to mentor to fellow Atlanta artist Diamond. She was feeling overwhelmed by all the changes in her life due to the incarceration of her manager. T.I. was able put it all into perspective when he surmised that she was having trouble adjusting. “Life is a series of adjustments”, explained the rapper, “We’ll be adjusting til’ the day we die.”

You simply must tune in Tuesday nights on Oxygen. When you do you’ll get to meet the stellar cast.

You got the bad ass beauty Bia mentor Pharrell last season we saw her take a pause from her grind to go check on her baby sis who got in a little bit of trouble. She’s a great sister and a great rapper.

Then there’s the charmingly handsome Siya spitting that fiya mentor Tank. She bravely refuses to change her image in order to conform. She is such a fucking lady

Of course there’s the bodaciously beautiful Brianna Perry mentor Rick Ross. This lovely lady got into a little dust up with another Miami rapper by the name of Chloe and actually laid hands on the girl. That’s not what Ms. Brianna is about because she was immediately contrite for fear of playing into the stereotypes surrounding rap stars she and her cast are working so hard to break. She later apologized to her cast mates and Chloe. She majored and business and despite the altercation she seems like a sweetheart

The nice and nasty Nyemiah. She breaks with the general tradition of rappers in that she’s kinda shy and reserved. She struggled with opening up so that she’s more likable and relatable to her fans but she’s still on her way straight to the top

Finally you got the diva dime piece Diamond. As I mentioned her mentors include award winning rapper T.I. and one of my personal favorites Eve. (Please drop and album Eve. The game needs you!)
