Black Friday?

Welcome to black Friday! Well today is the infamous that all the super savvy shoppers go and hit the stores. Today is the day that the stores have the craziest sales and best deals. The only catch? You have to go super early for the best stuff, might have to stand in line, might have to fight for their wanted objects and generally battle with hundreds/thousands of other shoppers. I’ve avoided black Friday madness like my whole life. Today is the first day I will have to work one . . . omg, wish me luck. Hopefully I won’t be writing a blog for Tuesday about how I got ran over trying to control the mob!

Now black Friday hasn’t always been around. There are many myths about the origins of black Friday but the truth of its origins not something as complex or shady as one might think. The name basically comes from back when stores used to hand write their bookkeeping. Red ink is the loss of money, and black is the gain of money. So when a store is in the red, they are spending more than their profiting. When a store is in the black, they are making a profit. So this day after Thanksgiving when holiday shoppers are out and about buying all their holiday gifts, this for some stores is when their earnings are in the black. Hence “Black  Friday”. Apparently the phrase was coined in the 1950’s to describe the chaos in the streets of Philly before the yearly Army Vs. Navy football game that always occurred the Saturday after Thanksgiving. So with the influx of everyone coming to the game who would flood the shops before the game that attracted thieves and others to capitalize on the increased about of people. This required more law enforcement to keep the peace and chaos at bay. In the 1960’s, the connotation of Black Friday became more positive as it began to evolve into the exciting shopping day that it is today. Want to learn more?
