Decor on a Dime(Based upon the philosophy of the original Diva Priscilla Mcmorris Martin)

We all want nice things. Regardless of what you consider nice. There is an image you want to project to the world with not only what you wear, but with what you drive, where you live, how live and what your home looks like. While it’s true these things do not truly define you a large part of who we are is made up of who we decide to be. I used to rebel against these social standards for the sheer indignation. I hated to think that people judged me based on what I wore until something my father told me years ago finally made sense, “See the world as it is not as you’d like it to be.” So while the rebel still lives in me I realized that while you can’t decide what race, class or family you're born to  one of the few things you can control is what you put on your body and that makes a statement to the world about who you want to be. The same goes for your home which is one of the most intimate places you can invite someone.

The problem is that if you read fancy decorating magazines and have a budget you may find that you have more taste the money. So perhaps the only option you may have is to pretend be above the want of material possession. Not! Here are some tips from the Original Diva and my lovely mother Priscilla Mcmorris Martin. You can make your home somewhere you’re comfortable and enjoy looking at after a long day at work without spending your whole paycheck. Because what good are fancy table placements if you have no supper to serve on them. The first thing you have to do is pace yourself. Pick a room to make your own and bring it together piece by piece. It just takes a little patience and a lot of creativity. I started with my living room and after 9 months in my new place I finally got it looking sort of how I want it.

No lie I got the couches from my mom (Thank you mom you’re a blessing every day). So don’t fear hand me downs or the Salvation Army. Now they aren’t in the best shape and though you can’t see the leather on the brown couch is peeling beyond repair but the leopard wrap I often wear in the winter was the perfect cover for that and it turned out quit fetching. The pillows are from a discount store called Fallas known more for its designer knock offs than it’s décor but they actually have some pretty choice home goods for dirt cheap, pillows, throw blankets, pots and pans, and silverware.

The curtains are from Walmart and were all under twenty dollars. And in case you’re like me I’ll warn you that you cannot hammer a screw into the wall. You need to make the whole with the hammer and screw in the screw with a screw driver. (This should have been self-explanatory but I can be a little slow) All the curtain were under 5 dollars and I needed four to cover my window. The scarf above the desk was 14.95 and you can drape it however you like. The rug is also from Walmart at 19.99

Those nifty orange candles were on sale at Walmart for 1.00 (A real steal) and both the vases, the owl, and the nifty multicolor medal ring doohickey are from Ross dress for less.  Finally  the colorful hanging elephants are actually wind chimes for outside but I repurposed them. So there you have it now get out there and be who you want to be.

The on a dime mantra and philosophy is an elusive trademark of the Priscilla Mcmorris Martin brand.
